v9.4 — the scene update
Two more: a proper demoscene CRACKTRO (copper bars, wireframe cube, chiptune, sine scroller) whose greetz are read live from the guestbook — sign it and your name scrolls past. And The Commons: a shared wall where everyone gets one pixel a day, forever. Pixels fade over 30 days, so the wall keeps breathing.

v9.3 — the desktop update
The menu bar grew real pull-downs (File, Edit — all greyed out, as it should be — View and Special). The Trash works: close a window and it goes there, and Put Back brings it home. About This Machine shows live RAM bars, uptime and how many times you've booted. ORACLE.a tells fortunes and prints receipts. Status now knows if anyone else is here. And when things break, the machine says so with a bomb.

v9.2 — the foundation update
A deep service pass: 60-odd bugs fixed after a full system audit. Stacked windows trap keyboard focus properly, Snake follows classic tail rules, the night theme survives midnight sun, retina rain is crisp, beeps no longer click, and the machine finally ships privacy.txt, security.txt and humans.txt like the old internet intended.

v9.1 — the persistence update
The OS finally remembers you: themes, sound, stamps & hi-scores survive a reboot. AW Radio actually plays — five generative moods, zero samples. Your real weather falls on the desktop. Sign the guestbook, leave with a visitor pass. Boot chime, a proper shutdown, a lowercase "a" everywhere it belongs.

v9.0 — the refresh
New project icons, a pixel "a" favicon, retired Clippert & pixel mode, VeganArchive, an accessibility pass, and a tidy under the hood.

v8.1 — Control Panel Update
Fixed all broken modals. Better typography. Serious Mode is now a printable CV. Snake arrows fixed.

The original nostalgic OS concept.

The short version: this machine predates surveillance capitalism.

Guestbook — the name and stamp you sign are published; that's the point. A scrambled fingerprint of your connection (a salted hash, not your address) stops spam — we can't reverse it. Want an entry removed? Email contact@aphwilliams.com and it's gone.

Snake — submit a hi-score and your initials and score are published on the leaderboard, with the same spam-stopping fingerprint. Same email gets entries removed.

Terminal & ORACLE.a — commands the machine doesn't recognise, and questions you ask the oracle, are sent to Anthropic (Claude) to write the reply, then this site forgets them. Don't type secrets into a 1998 terminal, or tell a fortune teller anything you wouldn't tell a stranger.

The Commons — place a pixel on the shared wall and its position and colour are public; that's the point. A scrambled fingerprint of your network (a coarse prefix, never your full address) enforces one pixel a day and is never shown to anyone; the daily ledger is deleted after two days, and a single hash is kept so the wall can say how many people have painted on it. Every pixel fades over 30 days and is then swept away, so nothing painted there is permanent.

Who else is here — your browser makes up a random number when the page loads and pings it every 45 seconds so the machine can count how many people are wandering around. We store a scrambled version of that number and nothing else — no address, no browser, no history — and the row is deleted 90 seconds after you leave. Close the tab and you were never here.

Weather — your rough city, worked out at the network edge so it can rain on the desktop, plus your local sunrise & sunset so night mode follows your sky. Kept only in your browser.

Settings — theme, sound, stamps and your local hi-score live in your browser (localStorage), not on our servers. Factory reset in the Control Panel wipes the lot.

Not here — no cookies, no analytics, no ads, no trackers, nothing sold to anyone.
